MOUSETON ABBEY

Mouseton Abbey was a particular pleasure to work on last year thanks to all at Make Believe Ideas

It appeared on the Alan Titchmarsh show and Sandra Bullock even bought a copy.

PAULO AND THE FOOTBALL THIEVES

Out very soon, my latest book, Paulo and the Football Thieves. Published by Fine Folio.

DYLANS DAY.

I was so pleased to be able to publish my first Picture book. It is hard to find the time when you are working on commissions for clients to fit in a personal project like this. It was something I felt strongly about doing and wanted to write a simple, understated book. It was incredibly hard to get published and in the end I turned to a publisher in the USA, Pinwheel Books.  It was hard to find someone that didn't want to change it's simple message. After a lot of discouragement and let down, and a lot of unfinished pages sitting in my plan chest, I kept going. I am extremely glad that finally after six years it found a home.  This year I really want to continue and work on another.

Fantastic News. Dylan's Day received an honourable mention at the New England Book Festival .
Thank you to Pinwheel Books for making that happen.

REVIEWS

Dylan the loveable dog must plan his day. With so many things to do, it's hard to focus on his ultimate goal, to find "the big fat cat who lives next door." He sniffs out bread and windows, finds an old rope and a watering can. He follows balls and chases birds, but with all of Dylan's distractions, he still manages to focus on that fat cat.

Detailed illustrations add life to Dylan's silly adventures. The young reader will find something new each time he or she opens the book. What happens when Dylan does find the cat next door is sure to delight while teaching a subtle lesson that admitting fear is okay. The rhythm flows without feeling like forced rhyme. A solid read aloud book.

"Tim Hutchinson's illustrations certainly aren't lacking in the detail department! His maps, exploded views, characters and working drawings have appeared in publications all around the globe. Now he has applied his not inconsiderable talent to his very own book. And what a beautiful book it is.

As you might expect the highly detailed illustrations are what holds the book together, but it also comes with a plentiful serving of heart and soul in the form of Dylan, a chocolate brown labrador, and his long term feud with the neighbours cat. It's a classic illustrated children's book, the kind many of us were brought up on and one that children will remember all their lives."
Nick Diggory, The illustrators agency

“What a great story with an excellent message! The illustrations were full of texture and interesting layers, which invited me in for a closer look. The main character’s adventures for the day were delightful to follow. His sweet antics made me smile….Dylan the Brave is my special nickname for him.
I would most definitely introduce this book to my kids. It would be a good conversation starter. We would be able to talk about and even have lessons on everything from facing adventures to exploring the uncommonly common to facing your fears. All of that and more in one book. That makes this a sensational read. Excellent!“
From Goodreads

“Children will enjoy reading about what a dog’s day is like and will laugh at what happens to Dylan while waiting to see if he does indeed catch the fat cat from next door.”
From Kidz Readz (blog):

“This children’s book was very cute. My five year old son was able to read it by himself and understand what happened. The pictures were nice and we loved the funny picture of the big fat cat that lives next door.”
From Libby’s Fun Books:

This is a great little book with enticing and enchanting illustrations that all follow Dylan, a curious dog who has much to explore. More importantly there are several opportunities with the illustrations for children to help “locate” the big fat cat next door, as the story progresses. Just perfectly sized and easy to follow story is great for a bed-time read, and soon children will be able to read this book alone without difficulty.

Dylan is cleverly portrayed with an “in to everything” sort of demeanor as he attempts to find the cat. Some of the illustrations are laugh out loud funny, particularly if one has watched or owned a curious dog.
From Iam,Indeed

I can't believe this is Tim Hutchinson's first book! You could read the book a few dozen times and still see new things on those pages. Then there are other pages that are primarily white space, with just a few simple closeups of Dylan in his search. It's so great to have both in the same book. I think it's the sign of an incredibly smart and versatile illustrator. It really is a wonderful and rare treat to encounter a children's book that I love THIS much!
From Mary Lavers Cozy Little Book Journal

This is a genius children's story. The main character is an adorable and loveable critter that is a perfect character to lead the way in this book. The story is simple and cute and the kind of tale that young children will most likely fall in love with.
The dog finds all kinds of things he can sniff and play with but his main objective is to chase the fat cat next door, and boy does he get a surprise! I've read a lot of children's picture books this year (thank you to my kids for this) and this is definitely at the top of the list.
This author clearly has a good idea of what makes a good children's book. The character has a simple and funny mission to complete, silly things happen throughout and the illustrations are intricate and detailed, even down to the bricks in the buildings. For once, I actually felt like the pictures were a good match for the story.
I would recommend this for children that are 2-6, but I also have to say that the parents will have fun with it too. I did.
This would make a great gift for a little one.
